Creationist’s Prediction: Geological Changes Can Happen Quickly

stalactites

stalactites on a ceiling

(Next in a series on Creation vs Evolution predictions.)

All geological changes don’t require the amount of time we hear they do.  For example: stalactites, fossil formation, and canyon formation

Here’s a picture of Stalactites growing under the Lincoln memorial (I wonder why the government doesn’t take some new pictures of these stalactites so we can see how much they’ve grown since men wore hats like that???)

I can’t see how long this stalactite is, but it’s definitely growing under a bridge somewhere in Tennessee. The people at John MacKay’s site won’t tell us where exactly, because people would go there on purpose to break it off.

This page is really cool with a bat caught in a stalactite (how long could that have taken, since the bat didn’t rot away?) along with an 11 foot long stalactite/stalagmite formation that’s only about 40 years old!

This page  has a lot of information and a lot of big words (unfortunately, I can’t recommend the whole website, since they are LDS). Check out the petrifying stream in England at the bottom. (If you follow their link to Mother Shipton’s site, the page titled “the story” is about a witch, but the science parts are real!)

ICR has an article that talks about how quickly things can be petrified.

If you’ve ever been to the Grand Canyon or read a book about it, you will have heard that the Colorado River carved it all out slowly over millions of years. Is this even possible?

Bright Angel Point trail - Grand Canyon North Rim

Bright Angel Point trail – Grand Canyon North Rim

Have your parents help you read this map of the area around the Grand Canyon. Red means lowlands, and the paler the color the higher the land in that area. If a lot of water were dammed up in the middle of the picture, how could it escape from its valley? There’s one spot just north of the Grand Canyon almost low enough, but not quite. The only way out of its prison was to shoot through that narrow gap.The funny thing is that the Grand Canyon’s gap punches right through a rise in the land. For more on how that could have happened see the free technical book by Dr. Walt Brown. For you older folks his ideas and studies are fascinating! Dr. Walt Brown was the first to recognize that there had once been huge lakes up there (the area is still full of petrified trees which need water to form) and that the Grand Canyon is a dam breach.

Remember this video of a dam release in Washington State? This event was WAY smaller than the breach that led to the Grand Canyon! And that was tiny compared to the devastation the world-wide flood caused.

In the video you can see all the mud that water like this can carry. They were moving too fast to lay down layers of sediment there, but somewhere near or just into the ocean, all that dirt would be let down and form a delta like the ones we see at the ends of rivers around the world.

What do you think? Little river over millions of years, or big lakes flowing out really fast?

And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out. Luke 19:40

But the falling mountain crumbles away, And the rock moves from its place;  Water wears away stones, Its torrents wash away the dust of the earth; Job 14:18,19 NASB

Creationist’s Prediction: Smarter and Better Ancestors

Giant Armadillo fossil found along Bray's Bayo...

Giant Armadillo fossil found along Bray’s Bayou, on display at the Houston Museum of Natural Science.

Humans and everything else are NOT becoming more complex, larger, smarter.

We all have seen pictures of the gigantic turtles, dinosaurs, sharks and other oversized animals in the fossil record.  Although there are examples of small animals of all kinds, a lot of them grew way bigger than anything similar does today.  Can Evolution really explain why they got so big a long time ago, but not anymore?  God can.  He made the world “very good” (Genesis 1:31) with lots of huge vegetation to eat and much more comfortable environments to live in.

Everyone knows that Europeans during the Middle-Ages were a lot smaller than the people living there now.  But is that proof of Evolution?  Neanderthal [knee-an-der-tall] bones show that those people were way stronger than we normally are today.   European stone age digs show that people after the Ice Age were bigger than their descendants.

English:

England’s Stonehenge: no one knows how they moved and set up stones 21ft tall, weighing 44 tons

BTW studying this, I just read a research piece by some evolutionists on these Post-Ice Age people, but it’s a major Eye-Crosser. For example they said, “craniodental and upper limb robusticity show complex evolutionary patterns that do not always correspond to expectations.” (My spellcheck didn’t even know these words!)  In English this means, ‘the strength of their teeth and arms was WAY stronger than Evolution could have predicted.’

And what about our smarts a long time ago?  I’m planning to write a LOT more on this, but here are a few things to consider.  Did you know that the best and biggest of the Egyptian pyramids is the oldest?  That around the world there are ancient cities with the biggest, best laid stones at the lowest levels? Today we can’t explain how any of them were built.

Here are some examples (have a grown-up take you, but I checked that there isn’t anything yucky on these pages):

Very early Inca Indian’s Stone walls and carving.

Island of Malta, pre-written-history shrine, carvings and pottery: this page is fine, but the museum collection link to see more pictures has a number of nude statues.  Here’s a picture of the actual underground shrine.

The Antikythera Mechanism an analog computer from 150–100 BC

And one of the coolest evidences of really smart, ancient people- the Antikythera Mechanism. I watched the History Channel’s video; fascinating and well done, but with a brief pan of a nude male statue.

It would be really funny, if it weren’t so sad, many of the Non-creationists willing to admit that there were some really strong, smart people a long time ago think there were aliens helping them!  I would really rather believe God and His Word than that aliens did all this.  How would the aliens have gotten so smart themselves?  That would just be pushing the time-line back millions of years, but not answering the Big Question.

And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he built a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch…. And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle.  And his brother’s name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ.  And Zillah, she also bare Tubalcain, an instructer of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubalcain was Naamah. Creationist’s Prediction: Erosion is Too Fast for Long Ages

Arch Rock on Mackinac Island

Arch Rock on Mackinac Island, MI

Natural arches, pillars and other erosion formed features are falling down faster than they are being formed.

This comes out of our Worldview of how quickly things can change from my Catastrophe! post.

The world-wide flood of Noah’s day had unimaginable power to change the surface of the earth. Have a look at THIS VIDEO  of a dam release in Washington State.  (I got this video from the Biblical Geology blog and my kids have made me play it again time after time.)  This gives you a little taste of the eroding power of the world-wide flood.

As the water washed over huge layers of newly laid rocks, it eroded caves, arches, pillars, and all kinds of beautiful and strange formations around the world.  A couple of years ago our family was visiting Mackinac [mack-ih-naw] Island, Michigan and went to see Arch Rock.  We were told that although they are trying to shore up the arch, it is expected to fall in the next 20 years or so.  This got me thinking about all the features like this that are still standing.

Although coast lines are the usual place to find arches, many water-eroded features are now far from a major source of water; some are even found in deserts.  If Evolution were right, that would mean they had been standing for millions of years.  Are there new places around the world that are now developing similar features that could be still stand in new deserts in another couple of million years?  Think about it.

Delicate Arch, Arches National Park near Moab, Utah, USA. Find the hiker under the arch in a blue shirt!

Almost all arches are formed in softer sedimentary rock that would have been brand new (think freshly poured cement) at the Flood.  Here’s an exception formed of granite in Colorado.  Have a look at a much more common type of granite Arch in Girraween, Australia.    What do you think?  Did arches like these get formed with the help of a lot of time or a lot of water?Great pictures of arches around the world HERE.

Natural Arches has a whole website about these formations. Check out the gallery, find out lots more about them, or even find one to visit near you!

Just so you know how quickly natural features around the world are falling (not including those being vandalized on purpose), have an adult click HERE  to see four fallen features and be sure to notice what it says about the last one in the list which is still standing.

This page at Wikipedia talks about how the coastlines of the world are constantly trying to smooth themselves out.  But they sure haven’t gotten anywhere close yet!

The Chalk Cliffs of Europe are crumbling too!

Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon the earth beneath: for the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old like a garment, and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner: but my salvation shall be for ever, and my righteousness shall not be abolished. Isaiah 51:6

I came up with this prediction without any help, but recently found others who spotted this evolutionary problem as well.

Creationary vs Evolutionary Thinking: Conservation, or Survival of the Fittest?

Darwin's finches or Galapagos finches. Darwin,...

Darwin’s finches or Galapagos finches.

Next in the series Scientific Predictions:The kinds of animals, insects, plants and all living things still alive on earth are shrinking.  We never see a known animal give birth, or a plant’s seed develop into a brand new living thing.  Genesis 1:11,12,21,24,25 all talk about God creating KINDS.  Unlike the neat and orderly charts you find in textbooks, figuring out what the limits of each Kind is isn’t simple.  The Institute for Creation Research is studying this HERE and HERE’S a specific study they are already reporting on.

We are still finding all kinds of living things that hadn’t been written about in modern Science catalogs.  Occasionally, we find a live sea creature, plant or land animal that we were told had died out millions of years ago.  You’d think that would make people wonder if the millions of years are true…  At the same time, we know that many things we know were alive 100 years ago are gone now.  This is called Extinction.

Evolution says that Natural Selection will cause the highest developed and best adapted animals to do well, while primitive (that actually means early, but they use it to mean simple) forms are pushed out.  One hundred years ago, Evolutionists thought it would be good for fish to have heavy fishing weed out the weaker populations.  That ended up in BIG DISASTER we are still trying to fix.

From the production of salted codfish

From the production of salted codfish

This page says nothing about evolutionary thinking causing overfishing problems, but it does show the effects with good video clips.  Interestingly, it was only in 1989 that fishing authorities were able to break out of their long-held belief given by Huxley, “It is impossible, not merely to exhaust them, but even noticeably to lessen their number.”  [which means: it’s impossible to kill all the fish or even shrink their population].

Today’s evolutionist has had to recognize how close to extinction many animals are.  So they want to save any form of life they come across. But Evolution itself says that animals and plants dying out is ordinary and expected; after all, it’s been happening for millions of years.  There is no real loss to the world because if an animal had been better evolved, they would have done fine.

Using the evolutionary worldview, there is no problem with invasive species.  If a new animal or plant is better able to adapt to the environment, natural selection will ‘favor’ this one.  Evolution says, so be it, what else is new?

Creationism says that God made each Kind of animal by itself.  If a group of animals or plants loses its habitat or is hunted too much, it will die out and be gone forever.  Creationism also says that you can develop hybrids, for example: dog breeds or extra petals on roses, but there will never be a brand new kind of animal or plant.  So conservation makes sense in a created world, but doesn’t truly fit an evolutionary world view. Genesis 1:28

albino fruit flies at the bottom of a glass vial

Evolutionists have been working to get one type of animal to turn into something different for about 100 years.  The most popular animal to work with is the fruit fly because it is easier to care for and has a very short life cycle.  To see some of the interesting types of animals 600 generations of working with these flies you could check out this study from NATURE [an eye-crosser for sure!] and then have a look at this page: MUTANT FLIES

Hmmm, what shall we call these ‘new’ things?  I know, Weird, Mutant FRUIT FLIES!

God’s word cannot be broken.  Much as people try to force nature to obey their ideas, nature is going to honor and obey her true master, the CREATOR.

The LORD of hosts has sworn, saying, Surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass; and as I have purposed, so shall it stand: Isaiah 14:24

Scientific Predictions

English: A Crystal Ball I created in 3D. Suppo...

I’ve read Evolutionists say that Creationists don’t make any predictions about science that can be checked out.  What are they talking about? And is this claim true?

First, read this post on Scientific Method.

What kinds of predictions would you make if you were an evolutionist or creationist?  Well, you could check these pages: what the Evolutionists  and the Creationists have to say. I don’t know about you, but both pages made my eyes cross and didn’t make me much more sure which one fits reality better.

(While researching this post, I ran into this page from John MacKay’s [rhymes with pie] website.  He is much clearer on his predictions.  These are just lists of articles showing how Creationism predicts reality while Evolution can’t.)

Basically, both views of origins come down to Worldview differences.  Are we going to trust our own smarts and thinking?  Do we trust our human teachers who choose to believe that there is nothing beyond what can be observed in the present? Or are we going to trust the Creator God who told us what He did and had His men record what He wants us to know?

This is the first of a series of posts that will list some of my thoughts to put on the Creation side of the prediction list.

Creationist Predictions basically boil down to two big predictions.

1. The universe will show evidence of being carefully and brilliantly designed.

2. The universe will show that it is running down and wearing out [also known as devolution].

Evolution has to predict that the way the not-living world (weather, rock formation, gas exchange from rocks, the magnetic field) functions today is the same way it has worked for millions of years.  This is how they say we can know for a fact what happened in the past by studying the present.

Evolution must predict that living things are getting better and better, more and more complex.

Evolution predicts that development and change in living things will be random and unguided.  This will produce senseless, unpredictable variation that still (miraculously) makes functioning, new adaptations and kinds that never existed before.

Posts in this series:  Prediction #1,  Prediction #2,  Prediction #3,  Prediction #4

But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach you; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell you:  or speak to the earth, and it shall teach you: and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto you.  Who does not know in all these that the hand of the LORD has wrought this?  In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.  Does not the ear try words? and the mouth taste his meat?  With the Ancient is wisdom; and in length of days understanding.  With Him is wisdom and strength, He has counsel and understanding. I’ve been collecting links all week, so I’ve very excited to share this with you!

Proverbs 31 woman (who usually writes about home canning and such) had such a cool recipe for Dinosaur Fossil Footprint Cookiesthat I knew I had to share these with you all.  These would be great for a birthday party, or almost any time.

I haven’t mentioned my favorite Ice Age Civilization guy in a while, but James Nienhuis has a great post on Questions You Should be Asking with short answers.  I’ve talked about how the mountains were covered, and what caused the Ice Age, but I’ve never heard of water being “carburated” and Mr. Nienhuis hasn’t written anything else on it (unless it’s in his new book).  Shall we ask him what he’s talking about?  (Just in today, another short article from his blog that talks about Elephants in Europe!)

The Red Rectangle Nebula

Dr. Rhonda has a great post today on how we can have such a huge universe with stars billions of light years away in just a few thousand years.  I followed her link to Dr. Lisle’s article and really enjoyed his picture diagrams.  It is so much easier to understand something with a drawing than with just words, isn’t it?

If you have a facebook account, be sure to check out what I have up on my page.  It’s super easy to pass on cool stuff from other creation pages that would take a lot more time to write up on here.  For example, when I logged on today my 5-year-old snuggled on my lap while we watched a rather weird sounding video of the sounds the heavens are making right now.  Awesome!

Today I also got this week’s e-mail update from Creation Research.  Unfortunately, they are updating their whole website, so the application page is blank below, but you can probably email them HERE and include the info they would ask for (your name, state and country) to get signed up for yourself.  This week they talked about a Science Daily article about how most flowers have “petals, whose stunning structure is best seen under an electron microscope.”  These cone-shaped surface cells are what make roses and petunias look so velvety.

Petunia, Thun, Switzerland. Français : Fleur d...

We’re just discovering why God bothered to give flowers such complex designs.   It turns out that these special shapes help the bees and other bugs hold on when the wind blows.   CR reminds us that the varieties of flowers which don’t have these fancy footholds survive because of other colors and designs bees prefer when there isn’t much wind.  This is what “natural selection” actually means; it is the process of living things with variations that still work staying alive.

For me, it’s nice to see real science going on rather than a bunch of impossible guesswork about the past.  The scientists saw something interesting that they didn’t understand, they made a guess about why it might be that way and figured out a test to check it out.

That reminds me, I finally had a chance to listen to the last week’s Creation Today episode and was very impressed.  The second half of the half-hour show is all about how Evolution isn’t science (like the flower study) and how schools are turning away from experiments and research to even more “facts” for all you guys to try to cram in your heads (I feel your pain!).  My favorite part is when Paul Taylor tells about his experience as a science teacher who first introduced the theory of Evolution to young teens who were well grounded in science.  I just love their reaction!

This idea of real science also ties into an article I ran into at the Ask John Mackay section of Creation Research.  Professor Ed Neeland talks about how bizarre it is to look at the “simple” cell (you know like the very first life form that spontaneously came into being Once Upon a Time) and think that it isn’t designed.

“Our efforts to replicate the building blocks of the cell have been a dismal failure.  It takes smart scientists, million dollar equipment and controlled conditions to produce a few simple chemicals found in the cell.  What do you think happens to simple chemicals when you remove the design and controlled conditions?  Just what you expect.  They don’t self-assemble into a cell but make but a tarry mess.”

Between VBS and other real life things I don’t have time to write up a proper post, but I’ve run into so many good articles on facebook that I don’t feel guilty! These things aren’t secrets for just “those in the know”, you can follow them too if your family uses facebook, or go straight to their websites to keep up to date.

Creation Revolution had an article that immediately caught my eye: Our Poisonous Moon.  Well, it’s not exactly poisonous, just dangerous like asbestos!

Creation Ministries International (CMI) has a more technical article on new studies of the planet Mercury’s magnetic crust.  It’s a little tough reading, but I like that it points out how what we are finding is confusing and contrary for Uniformitarians but was predicted by YEC geologists over 20 years ago!

CMI also has an article for you airplane and bird buffs called Fancy flying from advanced aeronautics: the design of swifts and jet fighters.  I’ve liked planes since my dad worked at Wright-Pat near the National Museum of the Air Force in Dayton, OH.  I was little enough then to climb on the big smooth tire in the first wing.  I don’t think you’re allowed to do that, but nobody stopped my dad from putting my brother and me up there!  The article doesn’t mention whether the Stealth Bomber designers copied the Swift’s wings on purpose, but the fact that they came to the same design anyway just shows how smart the ideas are.  Bird lovers will enjoy learning about the Swift’s brains and Dino fans will be interested in practicality of whether dinos turned into flying birds.

Homework

Now, for all us parents, I found these two sites to help us out:

CMI has a special section called the Parent’s Corner.  Although it has lots of helps especially for Home Schoolers, it’s for all of us who want to pass on our faith and guide our children into all of God’s Truth.  Checking around, it looks like they could use some help fleshing out some subjects, but I was very impressed with their list of articles under the Encouragement section.  We can use all the help we can find!

Although it isn’t “creation” oriented per se, I’ve found the site Raising Godly Children to be a daily source of encouragement for me.  They have a printable poster of 31 Biblical Virtues to actively pass on to our kids.  Their #1 choice is to focus on Salvation.  It’s easy to lose sight of that reality in the busyness of molding good citizens and students, but Jesus spoke the truth here:

Sunbeam-castle

Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.  For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it.

For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?  Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. Mark 8:34-38

The reverse is also true, if we aren’t ashamed of Jesus, He will be proud of us when He comes in His glory!

Dinosaur Soft Tissue: Evidence for…

English: A fossil of a Tyrannosaurus Rex in th...

There have been two events that have made the greatest impact on our understanding of geology in the last 40 years or so.  One was the eruption of Mount St Helens with its catastrophic effects on the land and forests nearby beginning in 1980.  The second was far smaller and happened quietly in the wilderness and in the laboratory.  I’m talking about:

The finding of fresh tissue in “millions of years old” fossils

Several years ago, I got one of my first issues of the free Acts & Facts Magazine.  They had a short, one page article on a new finding about dinosaur bones.  Turned out, going against what Evolutionists must believe, some scientists had broken open a dinosaur’s bone and taken samples to the lab.  To their astonishment they found soft, stretchy tissue and even blood vessels and cells!

English: Red and white blood cells are shown t...

Since then, I have found out more about Mary Schweitzer who was the first to examine these samples and what she thought about it.  Back in 2005 there were a number of articles about her findings.  If you read them you might notice what they DIDN’T write; although they had to tell about what was found, they almost never explained what soft tissue does to the “millions of years” theory.  That’s because even Schweitzer can’t explain how such stuff could survive for even close to one million years!

Microscope at Bioscience Center

For a while scientists tried to explain these findings away as poor science.  They even wrote papers claiming that what had been found was actually a “bacteria sludge” or as modern contamination.  But in 2008, Ms. Schweitzer published more careful evidence showing that there was no error, this was the dino’s own DNA and certainly not a contaminant.  Since then, a number of other fossils have been shown to still have soft tissue, proteins and even dried up squid ink! There’s no escaping the fact that there is still soft tissue to be found in the fossil record.

I was very pleased to run into a long, detailed article by Discover Magazine on Mary Schweitzer and the path that led to the discovery of the first soft tissue finds.  Although she is a theistic Evolutionist, Ms. Schweitzer is brave enough to admit that she is a believer in Jesus.  This tells you a lot about her, since the scientific community isn’t very kind to Bible believers.

That article also had some great info on how the first sample made its way to her lab.  Mary Schweitzer had been working with John Horner (of birds=dinos fame) since the 1990s.  While helping on another dig, she noticed that the dino bones stank like a cadavor she had once worked with!  The other workers told her that this happened all the time.  Turns out, the report of 2005 wasn’t the first time fresh cells had been found in a fossil.  Back in ’97 Ms. Schweitzer had published a report on blood cells from another T. Rex bone.  It just didn’t get much coverage (for some reason).

English: Main bones of Tyrannosaurus Rex leg a...

Then in 2000, Horner’s crew noticed a T. Rex foot sticking out of a small cliff in the remote area of Montana they work in.  When they had finished digging everything out and covering the bones with plaster, the whole collection weighed 3,000lb [1315kg] and was too heavy for the helicopter they were using to remove them all.  Because of this, they decided to break one of the femurs.  A few fragments broke off when this happened and they shipped them to Schweitzer’s lab for her to study.  The rest is history!

I tried to find a webpage for kids that would discuss these findings.  I wonder why I couldn’t find any (except for at Answers in Genesis)?  I did run into a Theistic Evolutionary webpage explaining the T. Rex tissue away.  Unfortunately, they wrote their article in 2005, so one of their main arguments is that if the fossils were made by the Flood less than 5,000 years ago we should find a lot more fresh tissue than we do.  They also make the case that one should only trust scientists who don’t let you know what Worldview they hold.  Why that should make someone’s evidence more trustworthy is beyond me.

One last thing, the 2005 sample of T. Rex tissue showed that it had a special kind of bone tissue that mother birds develop when they are about to lay eggs.  This is really cool to find out, and fed right into the popular idea that dinosaurs Evolved into birds (for a similar storyline, see this article on the Evolution of Pottery).  I’ve also shown what we actually know about Feathered Dinosaurs.   To see how dinos and birds match up, you could read this long article from Dr. Menton of Answers in Genesis.

Everyone will enjoy this video of That’s a Fact- Dino Cells!
