God Wants You! To Become a Scientist

George Whitefield preaching at Cambuslang 1742

When we would find out our newest baby was a boy, I couldn’t help hoping God would call him into full-time Christian ministry.  What a joy and honor it would be to have sons shining forth the light of Jesus into a dark world!  I still hope that some of my boys will do just that, if this is the direction in which God leads them.

But, is being a missionary or a pastor the only way you can serve God and earn huge piles of treasure forever in heaven? No way! God needs all kinds of people in His service: computer programmers, movie makers, entrepreneurs (someone has to have the money to support the rest of us!), artists, all kinds of service people… and scientists.

Last night I had a chance to sit down with the December issue of the Institute for Creation Research’s Acts & Facts magazine (sign up free HERE). Right near the beginning was a passionate call for young people with God-given abilities to choose the sciences for their life’s work. I’ll lift the bits that touched me, but please read the whole thing: Wanted: Young Creation Scientists by Jake Hebert, Ph.D.

Is it worth it to major in an easy field if you ultimately get a job that you dislike? Little wonder that so many adults are eager to retire from the workforce—they hate their jobs!

How much better to choose a career path that will bring ultimate fulfillment, a decision inspired by a God-given desire to work in a field that will bring glory to the Creator. Young Christian, if God has given you a desire to serve Him in a particular area, then consider His promptings. Maybe He is leading you to serve Him in the field of science. It may involve short-term sacrifice, but God’s best often requires hard work.

….Given the increasing anti-Christian sentiment in society and the academic persecution in the secular universities, there may very well come a day when it will no longer be possible for a Bible-believing Christian to get an advanced degree in the natural sciences. Academically gifted young Christians should therefore “redeem the time” (Ephesians 5:16) before that door of opportunity closes.

Taking the easy path has never been the call of Jesus. He warned those who wanted to follow Him to count the cost before dedicating themselves. His call always includes a cross to carry. What if that cross for you is giving up a career that makes a lot of money, where everyone around thinks you’re the best thing since sliced bread?

I’ve pointed out that if a Creationist doesn’t dig up certain types of fossils, we will probably never hear about them.  If a Creationist doesn’t do certain types of research, it will be buried or probably never done at all. Right now, without God-fearing scientists, there would be very little training for any of us to be aware of the truth of His creative hand.

Maybe God made you “nerdy” for His kingdom. I know He did it to me, and it is amazing!

“If you come to me but will not leave your family, you cannot be my follower. You must love me more than your father, mother, wife, children, brothers, and sisters—even more than your own life!Whoever will not carry the cross that is given to them when they follow me cannot be my follower.

“If you wanted to build a building, you would first sit down and decide how much it would cost. You must see if you have enough money to finish the job. If you don’t do that, you might begin the work, but you would not be able to finish. And if you could not finish it, everyone would laugh at you. They would say, ‘This man began to build, but he was not able to finish.’

“It is the same for each of you. You must leave everything you have to follow me. If not, you cannot be my follower. Luke 14:26-31,33 Easy-to-read Version

Evolution is full of Surprises! and will Explain Anything

Messier 53 has surprised astronomers with its unusual number of a type of star called blue stragglers.

During my research I noticed how common it is to run into articles that talk about how “surprising,” “unexpected,” or even “baffling” the results of a study or find is to scientists.  Although I know Creation Scientists are probably often surprised as well, I can’t help thinking that scientists would be less surprised if they all had a more accurate worldview.

Here are some of the surprises that we’ve uncovered recently:

illustration of convergent evolution

One of the ways Evolutionists get around characteristics that “unrelated” creatures have in common is called Convergent Evolution.  This is not something they mention often to children, because you’re too smart for it, but they talk about it a lot in the science community.  Somehow, I don’t think they would have expected development to happen like this if they hadn’t seen it first.

What do they think happened in Convergent Evolution?  Here’s the story from Simple Wikipedia:

“Convergent Evolution is what happens “when two species from unrelated lines develop the same traits or features. This happens because they live in similar habitats, and have to develop solutions to the same kind of problems.”

This describes what we see, but gives no reason why it should happen the same way in two or more unrelated creatures (why didn’t the bat start spinning a web, or grow a long sticky tongue to catch mosquitoes instead of wings?).  The faith of Evolution shows up more and more.  They dare not believe in a smart Creator, so they change the story so Evolution fits no matter what they find.

As for me, I’m going to worship and honor my super genius Creator God as my Savior and Lord!

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.  Romans 1:18-21

To go along with DNA for dummies? or for the FBI?

From Wikipedia: DNA, “However, there is no direct evidence of ancient genetic systems, as recovery of DNA from most fossils is impossible. This is because DNA will survive in the environment for less than one million years and slowly degrades into short fragments in solution.”  I think that’s the understatement of the year!

Check this out: if you want to extract DNA from a specimen to study, here’s how to do it, “Using ice-cold water and ice-cold alcohol will increase your yield of DNA. The cold water protects the DNA by slowing down enzymes that can break it apart.” from Learn Genetics U. of Utah.  There’s no way students were taking anything close to a million years to try to extract their DNA samples!

“We all know that elephants only give birth to little elephants, giraffes to giraffes, dogs to dogs and so on for every type of living creature. But why is this so?” from the National Human Genome Research Institute.  The US Government is Creationist!

You can make some origami DNA. If you do it right, you’ll have a cool model. Even if you don’t, you’ll see a little bit of how much work God put into inventing it!

I know, I know, it’s Summer and the last thing you want to do is more “school work.”  But the past two weeks of Creation Today Shows’ interviews with Jay Seegert of the Creation Education Center have been so amazing I had to figure out a way to inspire you to watch or listen to them.  So I decided to write up a study guide.  I promise, once you’ve listened and answered the questions, you will know more about DNA than the vast majority of people out there without crossing your eyes (just blowing your brain)!

Here’s your assignment Part 1:  Listen to this episode of Creation Today Show:  Is Evolution Probable or Problematic? and fill in the blanks.

  • Evolution requires lots of _____________ and ________________ to explain how living things came to be
  • Mutations happen when something changes in a creature’s ________

BTW I wasn’t able to find how much DNA is in a teaspoon, or if this is the amount in one person or many.  Turns out a single cell holds over 5ft [1.5m] or some say as much as 3m [nearly 10ft]! So, the DNA in a single adult would reach if stretched out end to end. It would stretch to the __________ and back ___________ times (or around the ________ 2.5 million times)!

  • How is DNA like this phrase, “was it a rat I saw?” _______________
  • How is DNA more complicated than a palindrome?___________________________
  • Is this something that is easily and naturally done?  Can computer whizzes do it? ______

The analogy he gives here is especially enlightening.  Share with someone in your own words…

  • Is a mutation likely to add helpful meaning to this?____ Why? _________
  • How long are DNA reversing codes? A. a single word B. a sentence C. a paragraph D. a chapter E. more than a chapter
DNA

This has already started to show you how good God is at making “secret” codes.  Now we’re really going to see how amazing His code system is!How is DNA like some Wheel of Fortune puzzles? ____________.  If you don’t know Wheel of Fortune, they spell out phrases like Jay Seegert does at this point.  If you like brain quizzes, HERE’s a set of these type of puzzles to try to solve.

OK, you can skip the last couple of minutes since it’s just closing notes.

Now on to Part 2 More DNA evidence for special creation, problems for evolution! (You can skip the first 6 minutes if you want)

  • Next level of “secret” codes in DNA: ________ bits of DNA and ________ing them together to get new info
  • How big are the sections that get spliced? Whole ________ and __________
  • Another level of information picks up pieces at regular intervals and forms ___________
  • What do mutations do to this coding system? _________________ Is this helpful? _____

Now we’re getting to real FBI stuff!

  • DNA includes data _____________________ to add more info

Here’s a whole different way of looking at the complexity of DNA

  • How long did it take you to learn to read English?  Did it happen randomly without any teachers?  DNA uses symbols to represent real things much like our alphabet (although God only needed 4 letters to do it!)
  • DNA not only has an alphabet, it also forms words using ____________ rules much like we have to study!

Back to the data encryption:

  • To solve an encryption puzzle, you have to have the _______
  • Is this possible without a programmer?

Now you know more about DNA than most _____________.  Who are they putting their faith in? ___________________

(I don’t know about you, but I love their Genesis Series ad!! Way cool stuff!)

Four-way DNA junction

Four-way DNA junction

  • The Third level of information has to be read in __ __ (you can make a sample like this by following Wikihow’s instructions, writing a code on the finished shape and then unfolding it!)
  • There’s a backup system of info in the Cell _______ that double checks what comes out of the nucleus to make sure things match up so if something changes
  • If our DNA actually was only 2% different from a Chimp (it’s really way more than that), how many “spelling errors” would it take to produce a human being? ____________
  • These changes would fill _________ books of _____ pages each!

Wow!  I don’t know about you but this makes me want to get up and sing to our Super-Smart Creator God!!

We’re learning more about the 3D nature of DNA all the time. Here’s an article from ICR on discoveries reported in 2013: New Twist in DNA Turns Heads, Genes

Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable. One generation shall praise your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts. I will speak of the glorious honor of your majesty, and of your wondrous works. And men shall speak of the might of your terrible acts: and I will declare your greatness. Psalm 145:3-6
