[Episode 10] Ever stopped to think about what God meant when He made living things “after their kinds”? Through the years this issue has caused a lot of confusion and even doubt about God’s word. We go all the way back to the beginning of fossil studies to see what happened in the church because of inaccurate teachings about kinds. Then, we get to explore about a member of one of the most interesting kinds, the maned wolf!

And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.
And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good. Genesis 1:11-12
I hadn’t run into this idea much until starting to interact with people online. Soon it became clear a number of evolutionists think we believe God had to create every species during Creation Week. This idea is known as Fixism. Since we can see animals adapt, and variation is observable, the Bible can’t be right. Right?
But that isn’t at all what we believe. Why would they assume this? It seemed like just a Strawman Argument at first, but I soon learned it once wasn’t.
By the 1830s, many clerics feared geology. Extinction was deeply upsetting to those who read Genesis as requiring every species ever created to be alive still. By the early 1830s, it seemed clear reptiles once filled land, sea and sky. As fossil discoveries undermined faith in Genesis as literal history, people across England left churches in droves. We didn’t take the time to get into this more on the show, but you can read how this idea actually started with Aristotle on Answers in Genesis’ excellent article, Do Species Change?
It’s apparently not a new thing to try to force secular ideas onto the Bible. It didn’t work 200 years ago, it won’t work today!
Very few creationists talk about the old idea we are told we believe, but lots of us love to stretch our scientific muscles thinking through the limits of change in creatures.
Here are the articles with infographics I showed my cohosts:
Answers in Genesis: Variety Within Created Kinds (cat family tree)
Creation Ministries International: Is the Evolutionary Tree Turning into a Creationist Orchard? (really cool drawings of what’s happening to Darwin’s tree and then the orchard)
You can study this to your heart’s content by plugging the new term we have for this, “Baraminology”, into the Search Creation engine.
I shared about one of the plant kinds by referencing my copy of Todd Elder’s book in progress, Katagenos. He’s got several books out already so I’ll link you to his Amazon author page.
Maned Wolf
We have our first listener contribution today! Galadriel did an oral report on the Maned Wolf and sent us the slides to share:
The Maned Wolf is the tall one below:
Great view of the adult’s black mane:
Thanks, Galadriel! 🙂
We had seen the Maned Wolf exhibit at the zoo just last week, but the only thing we learned about them is they like to take afternoon naps far from the viewing window… so, my cohost Charity was able to find out more about these animals online.
She got her info from:
Endangered Wolf Center: Maned Wolf
Denver Zoo: Maned Wolf
You can see newborn Maned Wolf pups photos from the Denver Post as well!
Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created. Revelation 4:11
