[Podcast Episode 81] How could Adam both die the day he ate the fruit and sweat to eat bread for a long time before returning to dust? We examine what Jesus and Paul have to say to help us understand this puzzle, then learn how scientific journal writing works-for good and bad- and finish up with a visit to Cape Canaveral!
How does Genesis 3:19 and 2:17 fit together?
Genesis 3:19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.
We walk through the ‘contradiction’ of Adam dying the day he ate and eating until the day he dies over 900 years later.
The New Testament explains that sin causes us to be dead while we are still breathing:
Ephesians 2:5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;). See also Ephesians 2:1; Colossians 2:13
Jesus told the Pharisees and others listening to him: Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death. John 8:51
So, however this works, those not in right relationship with God are already dead—”for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.”
And those who are in Jesus never experience real death:
Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: John 11:25
