Potpourri: The Other Water Cycle, Diatoms, and South America’s Islands in the Sky

I was checking my e-mail this morning and saw that I had a response from the USDA “ask a scientist” from the other week. It all started when I did my post on Photosynthesis and saw how much water gets broken apart to make our food. It set me to wondering why we haven’t run out of water yet and I wrote about it in my follow-up post on the Water of Life: Plants. Since I hadn’t been able to find anything that answered my questions exactly, I sent off an e-mail to Dr. Watts and now I know!

Turns out I was on the right track.  The only way to get back to the original amount of water you had before Photosynthesis started is to burn all the food the plant had made.  Now, I’m not talking about forest fires; you are a ball of burning energy yourself.  It’s just a very carefully controlled process that allows us to live and move and work.  Plants also use some of their stored food for energy to grow and live, but they don’t use it all up on their own.  Well, how ’bout I let Don Orts, who leads the USDA Agricultural Research Service’s Global Change and Photosynthesis Research Unit in Urbana, Illinois, tell you himself:

English: Sanderlings, Calidris alba and a seag...

“However, plants themselves are not balanced in this regard because plants [carry out] about twice as much photosynthesis as they do respiration.  The rest of carbohydrate that plants produce is what feeds all other organisms on the planet so it takes animals and many kinds of non-photosynthetic microorganisms to respire the rest and create the overall balance between global photosynthesis and respiration.   There is, however, one important caveat to this, which is that all of the extant organic matter on the earth (for example, organic matter in the soil, trees, peat moss bogs and fossil fuels) all represent photosynthesis that has been stored and not yet respired. But [you]needn’t  worry about running out of water for these reasons as there was a great deal of water on the planet before there was ever life here.  I hope this helps.”

Awesome!  God is sure amazing and He is very fond of symbiotic relationships [you know, where two organisms help each other to survive].  Hmm, I should write some more on that some time!  Notice that the Whole World Knows that Water came first. 😀

Also, there is a theory of Genesis 1 that’s called the “Day-Age Theory.”  It claims that “and the evening and the morning were the fourth day” actually means “and the evening and the morning were the fourth age which lasted an amazingly long time, maybe millions of years.”  Even if that was good Hebrew study (which it isn’t), it wouldn’t fit the facts.  You would have a dried up planet if you left plants all alone for millions of years!

Moving on to my other topics.  If you’ve managed to stay awake during my posts on Limestone, you will remember that Chalk is made of tiny sea algae called Diatoms.   Just have a look at the beauty and variety of these little things!  They are truly amazing and, it turns out they are setting a pretty puzzle for Evolutionists who have to try to figure out how one of them turned into another which turned into…  I know the article has some eye-crossing words, but I think you’ll get the point.  Things aren’t nearly as boxed up as your school textbook would have you believe!

Tepui (tabletop mountain)

Remember the flat-topped mountain from the movie UP?  Those kinds of places are very real and are helpful to scientists because they are amazingly hard to get to unless you’re a bird.  I’ve heard that some of them have been visited less often than the Moon!  These “180,000,000” years old highlands made of 2 billion year old rocks had been “successively inundated over some 200 million years by a series lakes and seas” (in English that means we know that water washed over them a LOT). Then they say the rest of the rock eventually eroded down until only these plateaus were left.

Creation Evolution Headlines has an article on these “Islands in the Sky” and how they are NOT cooperating with the Evolutionary storyline.   Having been separated for such a long time, they should have really weird animals on them.  Well, they are very different from what we usually see, but not from the other animals living on nearby plateaus.  Once you’ve read the article, think whether Creation Scientists have ever had a shock like this.  Do our predictions turn out to be so far off as these scientists’?

I will speak of thy testimonies also before kings, and will not be ashamed.  Psalms 119:46

They shall bow down to thee with their face toward the earth, and lick up the dust of thy feet; and thou shalt know that I am the LORD: for they shall not be ashamed that wait for me.  Isaiah 49:23b

As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.Romans 9:33

Since I mostly just copied and pasted today’s post, I’ve spent the extra time hunting around online for more links and things.  Besides the page I mentioned earlier, I’ve found some more traveling speakers with their ministry sites:

Creation Education Center with Jay Seegert is based in Wisconsin.  He travels through the Midwest and shares with churches and other groups about how complicated DNA really is and lots more.  I heard about him while preparing supper tonight on the Creation Today show (you do know they’re the BEST right?).  He’s easy to listen to and has some excellent things to point out including something that you can use to compare the National Debt to!

David Rives Ministries is based in TN; he talks a lot about astronomy and other things that look quite fascinating.  If you get Christian cable channels, you might have already seen his talk on The Heavens Declare the Glory of God. To read what he has to say for free, check out the Article archive page.

Next I found a family ministry called Creation Evangelism Tools Ministry.  Their “website” is here on WordPress but they haven’t updated their blog in a few weeks (it looks like they’re moving and stuff).  If you like to do word searches you’ll enjoy their Kids page, but I think the best thing I found on their site is their list of Creation Scientists!  The ones that are highlighted take you to Answers in Genesis’ page on that scientist, but they have more on their list than AiG does.  The really awesome thing is that all these scientists are living right now.  This ministry also has a few bios of historical Creation Scientists.  The claim of Evolutionists that Creationism stops any real progress is a myth!

I’ve also run into someone else totally different that I will share with you all tomorrow, Lord willing.  I’m very excited about this since it has been a dream of mine to share with others for years!

Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? Who hath told it from that time? Have not I the LORD? And there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me. Isaiah 45:21

New Links I’ve run into Today!

I had planned on a topical article today, but there has been so many other things happening I’m doing two posts of links instead.

To “build my platform” as all writers are encouraged to do, I’ve finally joined facebook (you can also follow me on twitter- I think).  As I do here, I want to have as many links to other Creationist organizations and speakers as possible and found a new one!

the Genesis Creation Science Institute is a local organization in the LA area of California.  They have a very nice website with lots of resources and even a kid’s camp  out there one week each August!  I checked out their links page (all four resources pages have the same info) and am adding these sites to my links lists:

Evolution Flunks Botany– I’m definitely checking that one out, but it looks kind of technical (lots of big words)

Lambert Dolphin’s Library has a huge section of articles on Science and the Bible.  For example, if you’ve ever wondered how all the different versions of the Genealogy of Jesus fit together (which I didn’t start to think about until I was in my teens), you will enjoy this article.

I’ve had Creation Evolution Headlines up for a while, but never really checked it out.  I’m going to subscribe today so I can keep up to date on what’s going on in science and origins.

PS At Don Ruhl of The Bible Meditator‘s suggestion, I just submitted a request to write for Answers Magazine.  I had seen their submission form a while back, but had no credentials yet for them to want me.  We’ll see what they think of my writing.  I just hope if they do like it that I’ll have time to keep up with you all, because you guys are the best!

Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name. Malachi 3:16

Vestigial Organs Are Not Vestigial!

The plica semilunaris of conjunctiva is though...

The plica semilunaris of conjunctiva is thought to be the vestigial remnant of a nictitating membrane in humans.

One of my frequent commenters here is Don Ruhl of The Bible Meditator.  Today he has a Creation Science post for you all.Vestigial Organs Are Not Vestigial!

It’s kind of long, but his points are great. The funny thing is how we keep finding purposes for all of these things, but common thought and especially kids’ textbooks tend to be decades or even centuries behind teaching these findings.  For example, the “animal stages” developing babies go through was shown to be a hoax in the 1870s, but they still teach it!

Interestingly, how we develop in our mother’s womb explains many of these features in humans.  Answers in Genesis has an excellent article on this, including the “plica semilunaris” [don’t ask me how to say it!] you see in the picture.

Here are some articles on the other “Vestigial” organs that Don Ruhl ran out of room for:

Answers in Genesis: Setting the Record Straight on Vestigial Organs

Answers Magazine: Hind Leg Bones on Whales

ICR: Blind Cave Fish

ICR:; Self-Cloning Lizards

And, for the guys: AiG: Why do Men Have Nipples?

Or, here is one long article that covers them all (including Dandelions):

Creation Studies Institute: Vestigial Organs: To Function or not to Function, that is the Question

And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day. Genesis 1:31

For the creation was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope, because the creation itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.  For we know that the whole creation groans and travails in pain together until now.  And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, that is, the redemption of our body. Romans 8:20-23

Best “Proof” that Creation Science is real

Sheep on French Hillside: Havang(nl)[First published April, 2012] Yesterday For His Glory and Praise tagged me with a question and it’s a good one, so here goes.

She said, “You have a great site that gives a lot of information on creation science, so my question to you is what is the one thing that you would share with kids as the best proof of the validity of Creation Science, and why?”

This isn’t the easiest question to answer.  I could point out any number of facts around the world that fit our worldview better than an Evolutionist’s, but none of these in themselves will convince anyone.

The best proof that Creation Science is real is what happens to me when I choose to believe it. This is the same as when we choose to believe that Jesus has been resurrected from the dead. It’s not something that you can pound into someone else’s head who doesn’t want to believe it. But it is real, historically verifiable, and stands the test of life.

Here’s a poem by a man who saw disbelief in others, thought about how he could prove his faith true and wrote out his results:

He Lives by Alfred H. AckleyRed Slate Mountain: Poppy

I serve a risen Saviour; He’s in the world today.

I know that He is living, whatever men may say.

I see His hand of mercy, I hear His voice of cheer,

And just the time I need Him He’s always near.

He lives! He lives! Christ Jesus lives today!

He walks with me and talks with me along life’s narrow way.

He lives! He lives! Salvation to impart!

You ask me how I know He lives? He lives within my heart.

In all the world around me I see His loving care,

And though my heart grows weary I never will despair.

I know that He is leading, thro’ all the stormy blast;

The day of His appearing will come at last.

Rejoice, rejoice, O Christian! Lift up your voice and sing

Eternal hallelujahs to Jesus Christ, the King!

The Hope of all who seek Him, the Help of all who find,

None other is so loving, so good and kind.

Old Testament ScrollIf someone is willing to accept this kind of testimony, then the rest of the facts, theories and presuppositions [things you just believe, like 2+2=4] that support Creation Science are able to make a complete picture of life with no gaps in it. If someone won’t accept faith because you can’t test it (not that you can test Evolution either, they just think you can), then no amount of evidence will ever change their mind.

Also, just like our belief in Jesus and His resurrection, our faith in God as Creator is based squarely on the eye-witness written testimony of the God Who Was There and our first great, great grandfathers.  There are only a few other faiths with manuscripts as ancient as ours, but none of them can stand up to the careful searching and testing that the Bible has withstood for so long.

  • If there were a Creator God who wanted us to choose Him freely;
  • If this God were so powerful that He didn’t need to use slow, wasteful, painful processes to bring everything into existence;
  • If He originally made the world “very good,” but allowed sin a chance to enter and wreak its havoc for a time;
  • If He also eventually puts an end to sin by catastrophic Judgement;
  • If this Creator God still loved us so much that He would do anything to restore relationship with those who wanted to come;
  • If this were really the case, you would expect to find what we do.

I’d way rather join Ackley than This Guy!! (warning: atheist’s article)

And an excellent but sad article about the problems of Theistic Evolution and how one man developed this belief by following people rather than the Bible.
