Superheroes, Evolution, and You

Superman flying down the sidewalkWhen I was a girl I wanted desperately to be able to fly like Superman. Swimming, I would pretend the tiles at the bottom of the deep end were city blocks I was gliding over. I would fall asleep imagining that I could fly. Not surprisingly, I would dream that I really was flying (my arms and legs had to pump like a swimmer’s for some reason ūüėÄ ), but when I awoke, I was earthbound again.

This desire is certainly not unique, or even unusual. We’ve been watching birds and other creatures in flight since the dawn of time and longing to join them in the air. Many ancient cultures have stories of flying people, including the Persians, Chinese, Northern Europeans, Africans, British and the Greeks. Human beings have always wanted to fly.

This is where Evolution comes in. If you remember my Photosynthesis Quotes, you will know that, according to Evolutionary thinking, plants noticed a problem (Winter was coming), found a way to take care of it (awareness of day length would tell them when Summer was high), and developed a method to correct the problem (daylight sensitivity).

We ran into the same thing with the teacher’s guide to introducing Evolution to little kids. The sea animals noticed that they were getting eaten by the scorpion-like creature, realized they could survive by swimming away faster, so they changed their bodies to accomplish this goal.

So today, I looked around to see how common this idea of organisms running into a challenge and finding a solution is in Evolutionary thinking. Here’s another example of this notion:

The Story of Human Evolution:

“However, it was not enough to always react in the same inherited way to each type of sensation. A particular smell might indicate food in some environments but danger in others. By remembering the association between a sensation and its outcome, mistakes did not have to be made a second time and successful outcomes could be pursued more vigorously.

Worms also inherited sensitivity to touch, temperature, and light from their single celled ancestors. A cluster of light sensitive cells has the potential to form a picture, and so there was strong evolutionary pressure for such clusters to evolve into early forms of eyes.”

Elephant Family Tree

Elephant Family Tree (Photo credit: Travis S.)

These creatures:

  • Remembered the connection between what their senses told them and what happened next well enough to somehow pass it on to their worm-like children
  • They just happened to start collecting light in some cells for no good reason, but then realized how useful this would be, so clung to it and put pressure on those cells to develop into eyes

So, with all the time that people have been dreaming of flying like birds, bats and things, we should be able to fly on our own, right?

Many scientists aren’t much happier with this kind of thinking than they are with our Creator God because it requires desire, planning and purpose. This guy explains the problem:

Evolution: What is an adaptation? Video Gallery

“The whole concept of an adaptation is the notion that there is a pre-existing problem and an organism solves it by adapting to the problem. For example, fins are an adaptation for swimming, so what we mean is swimming was a problem before fish had fins. The problem with looking at evolution in that way is swimming is a problem for trees too!”¬† Richard Lewontin

He’s right. There is no reason why those “proto” [first] organisms would have ever moved beyond their little ponds to develop any of the other abilities that complex creatures have. There is no Evolutionary explanation for why a dolphin should first start to swim so quickly and gracefully if it had been a land animal to start out with!

Once more we see that the Evolutionists want us to abandon our logical, orderly world filled with meaning and purpose for a theory of mindlessness that leaves us empty, pointless, and hopeless. The only reason I would be remotely interested in believing this notion is if I wanted to pretend that I wouldn’t be responsible for my actions.

Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.  Romans 1:25

Ancient Civilization: The Paths of the Sea, Ocean Currents

English: Matthew Fontaine Maury, USN, after go...

Matthew Fontaine Maury

I really wanted to talk about this yesterday, but decided it would be best to get you up to speed on the world’s processes first.¬† This way you know what it was our mega great grandparents were using as they spread around the world after Babel.

If you look at almost any book that talking about the history of our understanding of ocean currents, you will read about how people didn’t know there even were ocean currents until the 1700s.¬† First Benjamin Franklin and then Matthew Fontaine Maury in the mid 1800s noticed that there were other things pushing ships around besides the wind bringing us into our enlightened modern age.

These were indeed great men who deserve honor for discovering something that had gotten lost over the years, at least in the West.¬† But, since I’ve been studying about our super smart ancestors this year, I knew that these men were surely not be the first to have noticed the ocean currents.

Here’s what I’ve found:

I’ve already covered the super early maps that sailors made before the ice caps had a chance to build up.¬† We have proof that these people were familiar with the Atlantic from the far north to Antarctica.¬† They would have run into all kinds of currents during all that traveling.¬† Be sure to follow the link to the Genesis Veracity Foundation website because¬† Mr. Nienhuis knows more about Ice Age civilizations and how advanced they were than any one I’ve ever run into.

What other evidence do we have that people used and/or understood ocean currents?  A couple of weeks ago I talked about how people from the far East made their way to the Americas to start civilizations like the Olmecs.  I found a whole conference sort of talking about this in Sitka, AK back in 2010.  You can tell right away that they are assuming these people were helpless dummies, but they do admit that they could have easily ended up crossing the Pacific with the help of currents.

Hippos_2One of the coolest things I ran into searching around for this info was that we know that the Phoenicians (you know, the Canaanite sailors) really got around.¬† I’m sure you’ve studied some about these great sailors of early history, but I bet you didn’t know this:

Turns out, we have found the leftovers of sailing ships, harbors built like the one in Tyre, bricks made to the same specs as back on the Mediterranean, evidence of mining and metal smelting, stone carvings, and (sadly) typical Phoenician altars to their god.¬† The website that talks about this isn’t interested in Creationism or aliens, they just want the truth about the greatness of the Phoenicians to be recognized for what it actually was.¬† Unfortunately for them, these truths fly in the face of the Evolutionary story that people long ago were stupid.

English: The Dutch ship De Eendracht attacks a...

The Dutch ship De Eendracht (top right) attacks a catamaran in the Southern Pacific.

The other people group who certainly knew about the Paths of the Sea are the Polynesians.  Although the history books will tell you that they all came from South East Asia in little boats, there are a lot of other evidences we have for just how great these sailor cultures were.  Their techniques for navigation remind me very much of what Mr. Nienhuis talks about having been in use across the world right after the Flood.  There is also evidence in the genetics and even the plants and animals of the Polynesian islands that a lot of things came from the Americas rather than straight from Taiwan and western points.

I also found a really long, Evolutionary thinking web page that is quite annoyed at the popular notion that the Polynesians came straight from the west.¬† Turns out their genetics show much closer connections with people from the Americas.¬† This site also has a really long page talking about all the evidences of Caucasians and other peoples being in the Americas and Pacific that aren’t supposed to have been there.¬† It has some scantily clad hula dancers among a lot of great pictures and lots of idols, but has tons of unpopular evidence for mingled people, giants and more (I’m going to file that page for future ideas).

Creation Ministries International has an article on Ancient mariners had current knowledge for even more.

God made people really smart; even when we fell into sin we didn’t lose our brainpower.¬† Our great grandparents weren’t apelike numbskulls, they were brilliant, talented heroes of old.¬† If only they had been willing to submit to their Creator as their father Noah was!

Wherefore they cried unto the LORD, and said, We beseech thee, O LORD, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man’s life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for thou, O LORD, hast done as it pleased thee.
So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging.
Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice unto the LORD, and made vows.  Jonah 1:14-16

Science in the Bible: Paths of the Sea, Ocean Currents

Dynamic Earth - Ocean Currents

Psalm 8:6-8 Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:  All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field;  The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.

There is actually a whole lot of info on how much of the ocean the ancients understood, but I’ll have to save that for tomorrow.¬† For now we’ll learn the basics of what David was talking about in verse eight.

The Paths of the Sea is another title for what we call Ocean Currents.¬† I talked about these a little bit in my post on how freshwater fish could survive the Flood.¬† Deep currents that fish and other animals can use to travel and to find plentiful food are controlled by temperature and saltiness.¬† The currents that matter most to people are the ones controlled by the winds.¬† Since this is one of those Observational Science subjects that you don’t have to worry about a lot of distortion on, I’m going to let you study this more for yourself at:

Path of the thermohaline circulation. Purple p...

Purple paths represent deep-water currents, while blue paths represent surface currents.

USC Earth Sciences: Ocean Currents and Climate.  (I like how simply they present all the basics and their great diagrams)

  • What percentage of the oceans’ water is affected by wind?
  • What are the two forces that cause deep ocean currents?
  • What are the four forces that control all ocean currents?
  • I’m guessing you already know how the first three work, but what is the “Coriolis Force”?¬† If you can explain this to someone else, you will remember it for yourself!

There is a lot more to learn from that site like the direction the water travels when the wind blows, so have fun studying!

Extra Tidbits:

During WWII, German subs took advantage of the ocean currents to slip in and out of the Mediterranean with their engines off so the Allies wouldn’t hear them.

Since King David talked about it, I wanted to learn what kinds of things would be “passing through the paths of the sea.”¬† Here’s a sampling of what I found:

A “Slipskin” and a Squid that got from the northern Pacific to the southern Atlantic in 2010

Indian Ocean Crocodiles

Sea Turtles, but you already knew that from Finding Nemo, didn’t you?

Lots of very small creatures (has some very cool pictures)

Plankton and all the creatures that feed on them “The number of plankton grows where there is upwelling [an upward current]. Tiny animals gobble up the plankton and fish eat the tiny animals. This means that upwelling areas are full of marine life. About half the fish caught in the world comes from places where there is upwelling.”

Most every creature that travels the open ocean.¬† The page is very technical, but the title says it all:¬† “Marine animal behaviour: neglecting ocean currents can lead us up the wrong track”

for example: the Ocean Sunfish, aka Mola Mola, the biggest bony fish of them all Photo Gallery

Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee.
Who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the LORD hath wrought this?
In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.  Job 12:8-10

Creator God? or Mother Earth and Father Time?

The Earth seen from Apollo 17.

Our mother, or our specially designed home from God?

When my siblings were young, we had a copy of the cartoon version of Charlotte’s Web.¬† Near the beginning there was a lovely lullaby for Wilber that was all about “mother earth and father time.”¬† Well, this idea of earth being our mother and time being our father is rather common in our society.

I’m not going to send you to the pages that make this claim, because the idea of the earth being our mother is¬†bumping¬†into straight up religion.¬† Have you ever seen the name “Gaia” on a product?¬† It’s the title of one of the Greek goddesses, the one that symbolizes the earth.¬† In Latin, her name was Terra.¬†¬†Yup, like Terra Firma: Land.

According to the Greeks,¬†the goddess Gaia¬†was the first thing to exist after Chaos (I think you know what¬†he symbolized).¬† Her story is really¬†disgusting, so I’m not telling it here except that¬†Kronos [Time] was supposed¬†to be¬†one¬†of her sons.¬†¬†¬†Odds are you have run into this name because it has become very popular in our culture.¬† Exercise equipment, health food and many other things are named after her.¬† Can you guess why she is so popular now?

I even ran across an educational page from the University of Barcelona on Evolution that is named after Gaia.¬† It’s not terrible, but it won’t teach you anything you didn’t know before.¬† Not surprisingly, the Greeks were the first group to believe in something much like Darwin’s Evolution.

Recently, modern scientists have developed something known as the “Gaia Hypothesis” which claims that everything on earth, living and non-living,¬†is connected.¬† If you’ve ever watched Star Wars you know what I’m talking about.¬† Have a look at these quotes from Wikipedia’s page:

English: Earth has a hydrosphere, lithosphere,...

“Topics of interest include how the biosphere and the evolution of life forms affect (and in some cases contribute to) the stability of global temperature, ocean salinity, oxygen in the atmosphere and other factors of habitability.”

“The Gaia theory posits that the Earth is a self-regulating complex system involving the biosphere, the atmosphere, the hydrospheres¬†and the pedosphere, tightly coupled as an evolving system. The theory sustains that this system as a whole, called Gaia, seeks a physical and chemical environment optimal for contemporary life.”

“In 2001, the International Humanist and Ethical Union signed the Amsterdam Declaration, starting with the statement “The Earth System behaves as a single, self-regulating system with physical, chemical, biological, and human components”.”

If you’re paying attention even a little bit, you know that how people are messing up the wonderful world is a big deal right now even¬†for people who want to say that there is no Creator God.¬† Well, knowingly, or unknowingly, they are falling for this earth goddess idea.¬† I did a search for “Gaia hypothesis” at .edu sites and came back with schools¬†like the U. of Michigan, Hawaii, Stanford, Yale, and a whole bunch of other schools that are talking about this idea.¬† I even found a page where professors from around the world can announce that they believe this hypothesis.

The older name for this kind of religious belief is called Pantheism.¬† This means the idea that everything and everybody is a little piece of “god”.

Not surprisingly, there are scientists who don’t like this idea either because they want to worship themselves or the true Creator God.¬† But you will find this idea of Mother Earth and humans upsetting “her” balance all over the popular science world.

As for Father Time, you already know how much the Evolutionists are in love with that idea.¬† Without millions and billions of years of the stuff, they are sunk!¬† I’ve written a little on this and Answers in Genesis has written much more.

Let us turn our hearts to our true Creator, Designer, Lord and Savior and worship Him and Him alone!

Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the [creation] more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.  Romans 1:25

Thy hands have made me and fashioned me: give me understanding, that I may learn thy commandments.  Psalm 119:73

I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.  Psalm 139:14

Limestone= Pearls?!!

Nautilus Shell with Mother of Pearl, WikiMedia

I was sure my series on Limestone was finished with my folded mountain articles, but then I ran into an article on Mother of Pearl from Creation Revolution.  Being fond of pearls, I checked it out and discovered that Calcium Carbonate, the stuff Limestone is made of, is the main ingredient in them!

Nacre [neighkur], is¬†the¬†“official” name for Mother of Pearl which is¬†the coating¬†some mollusks like oysters make.¬† When I first started studying all the forms of Limestone, I learned that most of these rocks hav bits of sea shells and some are made completely from shells like Chalk.¬† So I knew that mollusks (shellfish) are good at turning Calcium Carbonate into shell.¬† But I didn’t realize until now that¬†Pearls are a fancy form¬†using¬†the same ingredients.

I want to show you how scientists are copying these mollusks which will also show you all the things a tiny blind animal has been preprogrammed to do all by itself!

Argonite Cave - Even More Crystals

Argonite Cave: the kind of crystals the CC wants to make

First, you have to keep the Calcium Carbonate from forming the kind of crystals it automatically¬†wants to make and instead¬†force it to settle onto the surfaces you are coating.¬† Scientists do this with both ions (electrically charged particles)¬†and special “organic compounds” added to the water.

This is an active area of scientific research. For example, at the end of 2015 a study came out showing they found the process of building Mother of Pearl was more organized and microscopic (using nanoparticles) than we had realized.

I found a Pearl Page describing natural Nacre and it says these organic things are “elastic biopolymers, which are chains of organic substance, such as proteins and carbohydrates, [and]¬†are soft and flexible.”¬† I’m afraid compounds and polymers are a little past my teaching level, but I think you get the idea.¬† These two very different substances settle out of the water onto hard surfaces and form super¬†thin, strong layers.

Every website I’ve found that talks about this process compares the Calcium Carbonate to bricks and the organic stuff to mortar.¬†¬†That picture¬†shows how the CC provides the strength needed to build up the shell/pearl while the organic part provides flexibility and holds the whole thing together.¬† Remember, the reason God designed the mollusk to make¬†Nacre (besides to¬†make¬†beautiful jewelry and gates out of) ¬†is to protect itself from intruders: parasites that would eat the animal,¬†and sand/grit that would scratch it up.

This is a simple schematic of what nacre looks...

This is a simple schematic of what nacre looks like on a microscopic scale.

Next, the shellfish and scientists coat this¬†first thin layer with more organic compound glue filled with microscopic pores.¬† I ran into an older biomimicry page talking about how copying the mollusk can help windshield designers make safer and stronger glass.¬† We’ve already been using a simple form of¬†layered glass and plastic¬†in our cars for almost 90 years.¬† God was way ahead of the curve, as usual!

Then the scientists add one more layer, and then another, and another. But the sea creatures are already way ahead. They don’t work single layers at a time, they “prefabricate” all the layers they need at once.

I’ve found some other studies from earlier experiments that were taking so much work and time they couldn’t actually use the Nacre they made.¬† It seems the real break-through in this newest method is being able to accomplish all of this quickly and¬†easily (= less¬†money).¬† Turns out¬†this time they used a robot to do the repeated dipping into the solutions.¬† Now they need to figure out how to use nanoparticles to build a framework for the Calcium Carbonate to fill in all at once. Easy-peasy. Not!

Mother of pearl with accrued pearls

So, what are we thinking of doing with this new stuff?¬† Apparently no one’s too excited about¬†jewelry (although I linked to the National Jeweler for the latest research).¬† God’s design is too perfect and copying it would likely lower the price too much to be very interesting to investors. What I’ve seen interest in are things like:

Once more we see how amazing God’s designs are:

Aragonite layers in a blue mussel shell

  • It takes years of research for us to even figure out what’s going on and more years to make rough copies of His designs.
  • We have to use electron microscopes to even see what God was up to!
  • God is so smart He programmed “simple” mollusks to do it.

And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God,
Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal;

And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass.  Revelation 21:10,11,21

The Most Amazing Dino Show Ever

Dinosaurs (Photo credit: CameliaTWU)

Well, not quite, it doesn’t have enough pictures!

I was catching up on my ironing after this morning’s post and finally had time to listen to this week’s installment of the Creation Today Show.¬† Wow, did it match perfectly¬†what I was talking about!¬† In fact, I’m going to set up a page so this show doesn’t drop down and get lost in the archives.¬† Although they don’t have enough time to get into all the stories and art showing human interaction with dinosaurs/dragons, they do cover the big ones.

They also wisely point out that even if we can prove beyond any doubt that dinosaurs have been alive at the same time as people the Evolutionists won’t drop their belief.¬† That’s because our beliefs about the way things were formed¬†at the beginning¬†is never based on what we can see now, it has to be based on choosing to believe what someone else tells you¬†or your own imagination comes up with.

Every one of us is free to choose to believe that we are nothing more than cosmic gunk that is here today and gone tomorrow. Or, we can choose to believe that there is a God powerful enough to create everything out of nothing and because of this has the right to set things up to His standard.

Another example of the same evidence leading different people to opposite conclusions can be seen in this delightful home video style account of Eric and Paul’s visit to the Indianapolis Children’s Museum.¬† As for my kids and me, this made us want to get down to Indianapolis pronto!

O sing unto the LORD a new song: sing unto the LORD, all the earth.
Sing unto the LORD, bless his name; shew forth his salvation from day to day.
Declare his glory among the heathen, his wonders among all people.
For the LORD is great, and greatly to be praised: he is to be feared above all gods.
For all the gods of the nations are idols: but the LORD made the heavens.  Psalm 96:1-5
