The Whole World Remembers Noah’s Flood

This topic seemed good to cover since Master Books has put out a book on the same subject. Haven’t had a chance to look at it yet, but you can get an idea of the kinds of things it covers from my article I’m reposting:

A couple of years ago I ran into the book Eternity in Their Hearts by Don Richardson that discusses the memory many people groups have of the great Flood.  I had heard of the Babylonian myth of a cube-shaped boat and the gods landing on the sacrifice afterwards because they were so hungry.  That story in the Gilgamesh Epoch is often used to “show” that the Bible just borrowed and sanitized other cultures’ myths.  But like all the arguments non-believers use, this can cut both ways.

If the great Flood of Noah’s day actually happened, wouldn’t you expect his descendents to hold on to some memory of it?  If it was just a myth, why would people groups from all over the world reinvent the same false story?

This is one of the commonly known evidences of the truth of God’s Word that non-believers don’t want children to find out about.  They will talk about it among themselves, but Cosmos-forbid the little ones get the wrong idea! “Flood myths are told by probably the majority of human nations.” by Albert L. Kroeber in Anthropology from 1948.

Turns out the Babylonian story is just the “cube” on the tip of the iceberg.  I found an enormous page covering these stories.  I was going to tell you the total number of people groups Mark Isaak mentions, but when I saw how many more there were after counting to 100 I stopped!  Every part of the globe that people live in (so no stories from Antarctica!) has groups that remember some part of the Flood.  Mind-blowing and Awesome.

English: Illustration of the Black Sea deluge,...

Illustration of the Black Sea deluge, before and after

An explanation worldwide Flood doubters have for why people “invented” flood stories is the filling of the Black Sea.  I once accidentally bought a book that claimed this.  I didn’t keep it, so I don’t recall the title, but I did read it (here’s a page with a pop-up ad that makes the same case).  The author explained that as sea levels rose long ago (which they certainly did, at the end of the Ice Age) suddenly flooding the fertile valley that is now the Black Sea.  I’m sure this happened.  But does that explain why they tell flood stories in the Pacific Islands and the Americas?  It takes just as much faith to believe that all humans were living in the Black Sea basin 7,500 years ago and carried the story around the world as it does for me to believe God’s Word.

Let’s compare what we have recorded in the Bible with all the other stories.  This page from Northwest Creation Network does a good job of this.  On their chart you’ll see that the only thing that every story has in common is destruction by water.  They’re chart shows that only the Babylon- Gilgamesh epic has all the story parts that the Bible mentions.  However, when I looked up that story on Isaak’s page, it didn’t say anything about people being wicked (and therefore judged), just that there were too many of them!

Noah's ark

This is not the real ark!

Now, let’s look at the details the Bible gives compared to the other stories to see which fits reality better.  Any story (like the Gilgamesh epic) that has many gods landing on meat like flies doesn’t fit.  Neither does a boat shaped like a box.  The Chaldeans said the dimensions of width to height was 5 to 2, the Bible’s ratio is 5 to 3.  Not too bad.  The Lithuanians (along with a number of other groups) knew that the Flood came because of wickedness, but they said that people survived by riding in a nutshell.

I wanted to see what the Chinese story had.  It says that the flood lasted 22 years and didn’t quite cover the mountain tops.  Maybe that’s why they’re fond of living up so high.  The hero gets killed by the gods and after 3 years a dragon comes out of his cut open body. Yuck!

There’s lots more you could say about the believability of the Bible’s account compared to all these others, but the main point is: They still remember!!!

If you like this topic be sure to listen to this episode of Creation Today’s interview with Jeremy Wiles who’s been to a bunch of these places and heard their stories straight from the people!

I’m not going to link to it, but I saw a page where someone stopped believing the Bible because he claims there is no evidence of a massive flood just a few thousand years ago.  I have a verse for him:

Jesus quoted, That seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them. Mark 4:12

Here’s an article from Answers in Genesis on the seaworthiness of Noah’s ark.

God said, For this is as the waters of Noah unto me: for as I have sworn that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth; so have I sworn that I would not be wroth with thee, nor rebuke thee.  For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the LORD that hath mercy on thee. Isaiah 54:9,10

Is Focusing on Young Earth Creation a Distraction?

Debate Logo

Next week, a scientist with the Institute for Creation Research is participating in a debate with another Christian. Each man will be doing their best to prove their position is the most reasonable and the other’s is not only wrong, but damaging to Jesus’ kingdom.

What topic is so important believers are willing to hold a formal debate at a seminary to see who can convince more people?

Did God create the world by speaking it into existence in less than a week not too long ago? or did He use Evolution over millions of years to bring us to where we are today?

One of the things we are likely to hear from the Evolutionist is that focusing on Creationism, especially Young Earth Creationism, turns unbelievers away from Jesus. Christians who believe God used Evolution tell us

  • No one will take us seriously if we ignore science like we do
  • We make ourselves look unnecessarily foolish
  • We close people’s hearts to the gospel by focusing on such an unscientific interpretation of Genesis chapter one

Let’s see how well these ideas hold water when we look at them carefully.

English: A child's drawing of a scientist.Do Young Earth Creationists ignore science? I’ve collected a couple important links on my For Teens page. The first encourages young people who take Genesis at face value to enter the sciences. We need lots of new people to search for the truth we find in the natural world. Then the first link under the skeptics arguments shows just how many active scientists don’t believe in evolution.

We don’t ignore science, we just refuse to interpret it the way the world wants us to.

The second point seems reasonable and serious. Who would put on a silly hat before heading out to witness? But, are we doing something unnecessary that could be avoided?

Here’s what God told us about how the world looks at everything He says, “For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.” I Corinthians 1:18

The only way to avoid looking foolish to unbelievers is to never tell them about Jesus’ cross or anything else God considers important. The reality that Jesus is powerful enough to use words to create everything (John 1:1-4 and Genesis 1) is awfully important. If He made it, He owns it. If He didn’t, He doesn’t.

Contortionist, posed in studioSure, people will think we’re foolish, but they thought Jesus was crazy, too (John 10:20). What’s more, although people who reinterpret the days of Genesis to mean long ages or even evolution can’t, the rest of us see what they’re doing. To believe both millions of years and the Bible you have to be really good at mental gymnastics or give up.

The last point is the most serious of all. How horrifying it would be to have someone’s eternal soul at risk because I wouldn’t drop some picky detail! But is this the reality we face?

The other week I heard a testimony at church. This person was at their wits’ end and knew something in their life had to give. Here’s what they said, “it was either atheism, or Jesus. Evolution was stupid, so Jesus won.”

For several years now, this person has been following God more and more closely because they first acknowledged Him as Creator.

A few days later, I caught the trailer for Creation Today’s new movie on Genesis. They’re bringing us into the process by raising funds to add 3-D technology to make this a top notch movie experience. Turns out the director found Jesus when he realized there really was a Creator God.

Then, watching the Galapagos Islands movie, I heard a bit of the producer’s testimony. He found Christ by reading Henry Morris and George Whitcomb’s classic the Genesis Flood.

All three of these people directly tied their choice to follow Jesus to the Creation/Evolution debate.

The truth is, the closer we stick to God’s Word, the more His power can flow through us. A God strong enough to speak the universe into existence in a matter of hours is powerful enough to transform me.

How Long Did Noah’s Flood Last?

English: Magnifying glass and book

Have you ever read a mystery story where some strange, little detail gets mentioned? By the end of the book you know it wasn’t just put in to fill up extra pages, somehow each bit mattered to the story.

The Bible is like that. Most of the time we long for more details and extra information about the people and events of long ago, but sometimes there are odd tiny facts thrown in. Sure enough, when you learn more about archaeology, science, and history, every one of them means something.

Some of the coolest of these details are in the early parts of Genesis.

OK, here’s a pre-quiz. The world-wide flood lasted:

  • 6 days and 7 nights (like the ancient Assyrians believed)
  • 40 days
  • 1 year and 10 days

The only way you’re going to know the answer is to pull out your Bible and look for those details. Here’s the first one to find:

Genesis 7:11

English: Eruption of Strokkur close by. França...

What’s it tell you? On the ______ day of the _______ month all the “fountains of the great deep”  broke up and the windows (or sluice gates) of heaven were opened. The Flood was starting!

Now for the fun part:

Genesis 7:17-24

How many days did it take before the ark started floating around? __________

How many days did the Flood last before going down (verse 24)? _____________

Genesis 8:1-2

horizon

At what point did the rain and ground waters stop? ______________ days from the beginning of the Flood.

Genesis 8:3,4

OK, now we have to learn something a little odd: ancient people always measured months as being 30 days long, so 150 days equaled exactly 5 months. So this means Noah’s 7 months minus 2 months equals 150 days.

Noah knew the Flood had reached its highest point and started to go down because the ark landed on the mountain exactly 5 months after the whole thing started.

Those returning waters are some of the coolest parts of the whole account, be sure to find out why!

Genesis 8:5

How much longer did it take for any land to be visible from Noah’s outlook on the mountain? 17 days plus ______ days equal one month (8th month, first day). 8 months need ____ more months to get to the 10th month= ______ months and _______ days

Genesis 8:6-9

How many more days after seeing dry ground did Noah wait before sending out the raven? ______ days.

English: The Dove Returns to Noah, c. 1896-190...

The Dove Returns to Noah, by James Jacques Joseph Tissot

Why was the raven not a good choice to look for dry ground? Ravens will eat anything and are especially fond of meat, even dead bodies. Doves only eat seeds, fruit, and plants.

Genesis 8:10-12

How many days after the dove came back empty did Noah wait to send out the dove? ____ days

What did she bring back with her this time? ____________________ So Noah knew the ground was dry enough for sprouts and that _________ seeds had survived the water.

A week later the dove didn’t come back at all. Why not? There must have been enough ______________ for her to survive without Noah’s help!

Genesis 8:13

What did Noah get for his birthday present? A look at _______ land. But he didn’t do anything but look. Why not? (there’s not a wrong answer to this, but you might look at the end of Genesis 7:16 for a clue) ______________________________________________

Genesis 8:14-19

Alright, now the Flood is finally over, at least enough for life to start getting back to normal! 601 years, 2 months, and 27 days minus 600 years, 2 months, and 17 days equals= ________ year ______ days. That’s a long time to be stuck in a boat, even if it’s an ocean liner.

Do you think it was a bother for Noah’s family and all the animals to obey God’s command that time?

And God did not spare the ancient world—except for Noah and the seven others in his family. Noah warned the world of God’s righteous judgment. So God protected Noah when he destroyed the world of ungodly people with a vast flood. II Peter 2:5 NLV
