Light before the Sun

Sun Rays, WikiMedia

And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. Genesis 1:3

There are some Christians who don’t believe that God meant Genesis chapters 1 and 2 actually happened as God tells us. They believe that God was just writing beautiful poetry to express His Evolutionary creation.

One of the reasons some say the days of creation couldn’t have happened the way God tells us is because light was created on Day One, but the sun wasn’t created until Day Four. They can’t believe that God would be able to produce light without a natural source.

But is this the only time God talks about light without sun or fire?

And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night: Exodus 13:21

This was no ordinary fire. There was nothing under it that was being burned up. After the Tabernacle was put up, the pillar spent all its time right above the Tabernacle, but it was never harmed (Exodus 40:38).

Pen and Ink drawing Moses and 10 CommandmentsAnd it came to pass, when Moses came down from mount Sinai with the two tables of testimony in Moses’ hand, when he came down from the mount, that Moses [knew] not that the skin of his face shone while he talked with him. Exodus 34:29

This verse tells us a very interesting thing about what happens to people when they spend time around God. Their exposed skin glows! Later in the chapter Moses tells how he covered his face so he wouldn’t scare the people around and it took some time (days or even weeks) for his skin to get back to normal.

There are people who think this probably happened with Adam and Eve before the Fall as well. My dad believes this, and so do the people making this movie (at least that’s what it looks like in the preview). Either way, we know people can shine without the sun, just from being near God.

As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud in the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness round about. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. Ezekiel 1:28

God Himself glows like a rainbow. There are four verses in the Psalms that talk about God shining on His people (Ps 67:1; 80:3,7,19). Daniel prayed that God would shine on His sanctuary in chapter 9:17. If anyone still doubts that God meant to give us the idea that He glows very brightly have a look at this passage:

And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.  And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it.  And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there. Revelation 21:23-25

Unless you are willing to say that the New Jerusalem that lasts forever is just a beautiful poem trying to describe what God actually meant, this is plain as day. Only a small, weak god would need to first create a sun before it could make light. Just like only a small, weak god would have to use something so painful and wasteful as Evolution to make the world we see around us.

Thank God He is actually great and mighty. His power is without limits. All Jesus had to do was speak the word and it was. Light, land, life are all perfectly planned from His mind straight to being real around and in us!

See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god with me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal: neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand.  For I lift up my hand to heaven, and say, I live for ever. Deuteronomy 32:39,40

Is Focusing on Young Earth Creation a Distraction?

Debate Logo

Next week, a scientist with the Institute for Creation Research is participating in a debate with another Christian. Each man will be doing their best to prove their position is the most reasonable and the other’s is not only wrong, but damaging to Jesus’ kingdom.

What topic is so important believers are willing to hold a formal debate at a seminary to see who can convince more people?

Did God create the world by speaking it into existence in less than a week not too long ago? or did He use Evolution over millions of years to bring us to where we are today?

One of the things we are likely to hear from the Evolutionist is that focusing on Creationism, especially Young Earth Creationism, turns unbelievers away from Jesus. Christians who believe God used Evolution tell us

  • No one will take us seriously if we ignore science like we do
  • We make ourselves look unnecessarily foolish
  • We close people’s hearts to the gospel by focusing on such an unscientific interpretation of Genesis chapter one

Let’s see how well these ideas hold water when we look at them carefully.

English: A child's drawing of a scientist.Do Young Earth Creationists ignore science? I’ve collected a couple important links on my For Teens page. The first encourages young people who take Genesis at face value to enter the sciences. We need lots of new people to search for the truth we find in the natural world. Then the first link under the skeptics arguments shows just how many active scientists don’t believe in evolution.

We don’t ignore science, we just refuse to interpret it the way the world wants us to.

The second point seems reasonable and serious. Who would put on a silly hat before heading out to witness? But, are we doing something unnecessary that could be avoided?

Here’s what God told us about how the world looks at everything He says, “For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.” I Corinthians 1:18

The only way to avoid looking foolish to unbelievers is to never tell them about Jesus’ cross or anything else God considers important. The reality that Jesus is powerful enough to use words to create everything (John 1:1-4 and Genesis 1) is awfully important. If He made it, He owns it. If He didn’t, He doesn’t.

Contortionist, posed in studioSure, people will think we’re foolish, but they thought Jesus was crazy, too (John 10:20). What’s more, although people who reinterpret the days of Genesis to mean long ages or even evolution can’t, the rest of us see what they’re doing. To believe both millions of years and the Bible you have to be really good at mental gymnastics or give up.

The last point is the most serious of all. How horrifying it would be to have someone’s eternal soul at risk because I wouldn’t drop some picky detail! But is this the reality we face?

The other week I heard a testimony at church. This person was at their wits’ end and knew something in their life had to give. Here’s what they said, “it was either atheism, or Jesus. Evolution was stupid, so Jesus won.”

For several years now, this person has been following God more and more closely because they first acknowledged Him as Creator.

A few days later, I caught the trailer for Creation Today’s new movie on Genesis. They’re bringing us into the process by raising funds to add 3-D technology to make this a top notch movie experience. Turns out the director found Jesus when he realized there really was a Creator God.

Then, watching the Galapagos Islands movie, I heard a bit of the producer’s testimony. He found Christ by reading Henry Morris and George Whitcomb’s classic the Genesis Flood.

All three of these people directly tied their choice to follow Jesus to the Creation/Evolution debate.

The truth is, the closer we stick to God’s Word, the more His power can flow through us. A God strong enough to speak the universe into existence in a matter of hours is powerful enough to transform me.

Best “Proof” that Creation Science is real

Sheep on French Hillside: Havang(nl)[First published April, 2012] Yesterday For His Glory and Praise tagged me with a question and it’s a good one, so here goes.

She said, “You have a great site that gives a lot of information on creation science, so my question to you is what is the one thing that you would share with kids as the best proof of the validity of Creation Science, and why?”

This isn’t the easiest question to answer.  I could point out any number of facts around the world that fit our worldview better than an Evolutionist’s, but none of these in themselves will convince anyone.

The best proof that Creation Science is real is what happens to me when I choose to believe it. This is the same as when we choose to believe that Jesus has been resurrected from the dead. It’s not something that you can pound into someone else’s head who doesn’t want to believe it. But it is real, historically verifiable, and stands the test of life.

Here’s a poem by a man who saw disbelief in others, thought about how he could prove his faith true and wrote out his results:

He Lives by Alfred H. AckleyRed Slate Mountain: Poppy

I serve a risen Saviour; He’s in the world today.

I know that He is living, whatever men may say.

I see His hand of mercy, I hear His voice of cheer,

And just the time I need Him He’s always near.

He lives! He lives! Christ Jesus lives today!

He walks with me and talks with me along life’s narrow way.

He lives! He lives! Salvation to impart!

You ask me how I know He lives? He lives within my heart.

In all the world around me I see His loving care,

And though my heart grows weary I never will despair.

I know that He is leading, thro’ all the stormy blast;

The day of His appearing will come at last.

Rejoice, rejoice, O Christian! Lift up your voice and sing

Eternal hallelujahs to Jesus Christ, the King!

The Hope of all who seek Him, the Help of all who find,

None other is so loving, so good and kind.

Old Testament ScrollIf someone is willing to accept this kind of testimony, then the rest of the facts, theories and presuppositions [things you just believe, like 2+2=4] that support Creation Science are able to make a complete picture of life with no gaps in it. If someone won’t accept faith because you can’t test it (not that you can test Evolution either, they just think you can), then no amount of evidence will ever change their mind.

Also, just like our belief in Jesus and His resurrection, our faith in God as Creator is based squarely on the eye-witness written testimony of the God Who Was There and our first great, great grandfathers.  There are only a few other faiths with manuscripts as ancient as ours, but none of them can stand up to the careful searching and testing that the Bible has withstood for so long.

  • If there were a Creator God who wanted us to choose Him freely;
  • If this God were so powerful that He didn’t need to use slow, wasteful, painful processes to bring everything into existence;
  • If He originally made the world “very good,” but allowed sin a chance to enter and wreak its havoc for a time;
  • If He also eventually puts an end to sin by catastrophic Judgement;
  • If this Creator God still loved us so much that He would do anything to restore relationship with those who wanted to come;
  • If this were really the case, you would expect to find what we do.

I’d way rather join Ackley than This Guy!! (warning: atheist’s article)
